Officer of the Year 1992

Patrolwoman Stacy F. Lim
Los Angles Police Department, California

On June 9, 1990, Officer Lim was confronted by a gunman who was armed with a .357 magnum. Not realizing she was an officer, the intention was to steal her car. She was followed home after working a tour of duty. When she identified herself as a police officer the assailant fired and Officer Lim was hit in the chest. She was able to return fire, killing the assailant. He had a long history of violent crimes. Officer Lim fell to the street. Medics arriving found no vital signs. Rushing her to the hospital they were able to revive her. The ordeal was just beginning. The bullet had penetrated her heart, and fragmented, damaging other vital organs. Three times doctors had to bring her back from death. Her will and spirit to survive were tested time and again. Upon recovery she was offered almost any assignment off the street. Officer Stacy F. Lim, whose courage, bravery and fidelity symbolized the many men and women in law enforcement, selected to return to patrol duty in one of the highest crime areas of the city. In doing so, when many might say, “just how much do I have to do for my community,” she has earned the highest honor we can bestow. Officer Stacy Lim represents the growing numbers of women in law enforcement who prove they are outstanding law enforcement officers, who when called upon, serve above and beyond the call of duty. In an area of violence where every moment of every day is at great personal risk, her valor is an example for others to follow.
