Family Survivor's Fund
Nearly eight years ago the American Federation of Police and its Concerned
Citizens program enabled us to reach out to be of significant help to families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. Today, in May of the year
2000, we are able to report that 7,556 survivors, representing every state and United States Territories, are members of our program. In this time period alone
more than $1,244,500.00 was provided in direct assistance to the families. That does not even include the funds used for our educational program to citizens!
This amount may look impressive but it is equally important to see how these funds, which were donated by our many concerned citizens, were actually utilized.
Direct Financial Assistance and Grief Counseling Grants Each time an officer is killed in the line of duty AFP&CC's Police Family
Survivor's Fund sends an emergency assistance check for $1,500 to the family of an officer who has made the supreme sacrifice. This amount reflects a 33.3%
increase in the emergency assistance provided last year alone! The Fund also provides a $500 grief counseling grant to be used in whatever manner the family deems appropriate.
We do this in the form of a grant so that a family is not obligated to choose from a select group of counselors. It provides the leeway and discretion that is
needed in a time of deep emotional grief. Also, the organization sends the Police Memorial Flag, Posthumous Medal of Honor, Police Family Survivor
Shield and information on how the family may avail itself of our other programs that are made available year round. The material is sent in care of the police
chief, sheriff or regional staff officer of the organization to be presented to the family at the time that is appropriate. In the last fiscal year alone, More than
$129,000 was provided for emergency assistance and an additional $64,500 for grief counseling grants. News |
