HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS. The National Association of Chiefs of
Police, a tax-exempt charitable organization, solicits used or excess bullet resistant vests from large police departments, agencies, security corporations and individual donors. Vests over five years old are often
replaced but have many years of additional usage. The donated vests are logged into our computer system by size (S.M.L.XL, XXL). PROMOTION The "Vests For Life" clearinghouse is promoted in the
organizations bimonthly magazine, as well as a newsletter that is sent to every police chief and sheriff in America each quarter. Smaller police associations run news of the program in their magazines and newsletters.
The internet has been an excellent source of the program, as well.
LIMITATIONS As demand for the vests through the program far outweighs
the supply there is a limit of three vest requests per department and the applicants must be full-time sworn American law enforcement officers.
LIABILITY Before any recipient is issued a vest, he/she signs a liability waiver as a protection.
HOW DO I GO ABOUT APPLYING FOR A VEST? Applications may be
made by individuals or departments and must be on city or departmental letterhead. Full-time officers only may apply. Maximum of three vests issued per department. Make application by mail (no fax or e-mail) to JIM
GORDON, "Vests For Life" Administrator, 6350 Horizon Dr., Titusville, FL 32780. You will be put on a waiting list and will be sent a liability waiver from NACOP when your size becomes available. NACOP pays for all
shipping and handling. There is NO CHARGE WHATSOEVER to the recipient.
WHAT IF I HAVE A VEST TO DONATE? We are in great need of used
vests to perpetuate the program! Simply mail or ship insured mail your vest to the address above. Your donation will be gratefully appreciated and acknowledged by mail.
HOW MANY VESTS HAVE YOU GIVEN OUT TO DATE? In the four years the program has been ongoing, NACOP has been able to give out five hundred vests...one of which actually saved the life of a Missouri officer!
