NACOP's K-9 Program presents Check to Littleville, Alabama Police Department

Donna Shepherd and Jamie Shepherd of the National Association of Chiefs of Police (NACOP) presented a $5,000 check to Officer James Chaney of the Littleville, Alabama police department for the department’s K-9 program. The presentation was made in front of the police officers’ memorial at the American Police Hall of Fame and Museum on Monday, September 23, 2002. NACOP’s K-9 Program is designed to assist under-funded police departments with their K-9 programs. Funds provided by NACOP can be used by the department for a number of resources, including: the purchase of a canine, the training of both the handler and the dog, adaptations to the officer’s patrol vehicle, dog food and veterinary expenses. In an interview with Officer Chaney, he stated that the new police canine would be used primarily for narcotics detection. He said that, even though Littleville is a small town, there is a big drug problem in the area. Chaney believes that the addition of the police canine to the department will enable them to more effectively combat the drug problem. Officer Chaney would also like to see the canine trained in search and rescue. He plans to use the dog in a community relations capacity, as well, and hopes to join a program that works within the school system.
